Columbia City Ale House Description:
Considered by some to be the first "gastro-pub" in Seattle, the Columbia City Ale House began offering quality food and fine ales in 1991. It's a welcoming sort of place where you can eat alone at the bar with a newspaper and not feel awkward, or meet up with friends or a date for a weeknight meal. Its menu over the years also proves "beer food" need not be "bar food." Sure, there's a burger on the menu, but it's made from free-range local beef. Bar snacks are available, but include curried cashews rather than the norm of dry pretzels. A zingy blackened salmon sandwich and rotating soups along with an ever-present gumbo all pair well with the rotation of mostly-local microbrews or a robust pint of Guinness. The middle-tier wine list complements many often-spicy dishes. While things do get noisy with the chatter, the music plays low and the service is friendly, if at times overwhelmed.
