Despite their sedate Northwest persona, Portlanders are accustomed to boisterous Greek restaurants where men dance with chairs in their teeth and smash plates on the floor. Eleni Touhouliotis waitressed for years in one of those rowdy Greek eateries, saving her tips until she could fulfill her vision of opening an elegant, modern restaurant with an upscale menu. Her vision realized, this space is warm and inviting, its cozy candlelight rooms offset by high ceilings and a bustling, visible kitchen. The menu offers the usual Greek mainstays---spanakopita and kalamari---as well as a bounty of unusual dishes, many from Eleni's native Crete, such as her favorite, kalitsounia, a savory spinach, dill and green onion mixture rolled in flaky phyllo. A sister restaurant, Eleni's Philoxenia, in the Pearl District, offers similar sophisticated dining.
