Gino's Description:
The sign out front says "Original Leipzig Tavern" but those days are long gone. The interior is still classic with an early twentieth-century oak bar and striking antique fixtures. But Gino's kitchen serves Italian cooking that is fresh and contemporary. Gino's signature dish is Grandma Jean's pasta, a peasant-like stew of beef, pork ribs and tomatoes ladled generously over a mound of penne. Pastas are seasonally driven, but there's always an offering of plump mussels, squid, shrimp and clams poured over fettuccine. The large garlicky Caesar salad is bracing. Everything is fresh, which takes time, so service is slow but friendly. The feel of Gino's is trademark Portland casual, but its devoted fans know something special goes on in the kitchen.
