Mississauga, Ont, City, pop 612 925 (2001c), 544 382 (1996c), 463 388 (1991c), area 288.42 km2, inc 1974, is located west of TORONTO on Lake ONTARIO. Originally called Toronto Township, its present name is derived from the original inhabitants, the Mississauga, a band of the OJIBWA, who had migrated from the upper GREAT LAKES region by the early 18th century.
