Saké no Hana Description:
The restaurant has been through a fair number of incarnations, but its locality and configuration is peculiar to say the least. It's in an iconic modern building on St. James's and on two floors. Downstairs there's the more informal sushi bar; up an escalator and you're into expensive, serious Japanese dining territory. You can choose Western-style seating or traditional low tables with a well to tuck your feet into, which are, of course, shoeless. The décor is elegant with discreet screens, sculptures and subtle lighting; the service suitably low-key. The clientele is international, clearly at home with the likes of king crab and cucumber salad; sautéed lotus root; a limited but impressive range of sashimi from tuna to turbot, octopus to eel; prawn tempura rolls; dragon roll with eel, avocado and tobiko caviar; and top sushi. Grills come in the likes of miso sea bass in houba leaf. It is not as expensive as the décor seems to suggest, until you come to the drinks which can make the bill a shock. It's known for its sakés, so if you are an aficionado this is a real treat though you might hope somebody else is paying the tab.
