The Pantechnicon Rooms Description:
The clever owners of the Thomas Cubitt gastropub have struck gold again, nicely judging the area and clientele. The smart, two-storied venue is called after the famous Pantechnicon of "fireproof" warehouses, stables, wine vaults and carriage houses, which embarrassingly burnt down (apart from the frontage) in 1874. The upstairs dining room is distinctly posh with leather chairs at well-spaced tables and lovely sash windows framed by billowing linen curtains. The menu is also distinctly posh with starters like oysters or seared scallops with tomato ragoƻt, fennel seed pastry and Champagne sauce; and mains which include sea bass with dauphinoise potatoes, smoked aubergine and baby courgettes. Even the would-be rustic, down-to-earth and now requisite pork belly with slowly braised cheek comes with truffled polenta and Calvados jus. Desserts mix cuisines: three pots of different chocolate preparations appear happily beside rhubarb and vanilla custard tart. The wine list is very good, using a first-rate mix of producers and ranging the world. Service is also spot-on. You can eat in the bar downstairs at prices not much less than those in the dining room---which are high.
