Zafferano Description:
Being in such a smart neighbourhood makes this essentially local restaurant all the more surprising. It's a pretty, though relatively small, venue, its two interconnecting rooms suitably tiled. The emphasis is on fresh ingredients treated with proper respect, so don't expect one of those menus full of odd mixtures of tastes and elaborate cooking methods. Cured tuna comes with French beans and richly reduced tomatoes; char-grilled cuttlefish with rocket and sweet chilli. Pastas are masterly and equally as simple: spaghetti comes with lobster and tomato; ravioli is filled with veal and saffron risottos are for two. Fish is treated with due respect so sea bass might appear with a simple spring vegetable fricassée. Meat arrives moist, well-rounded and full of flavour. Desserts tempt as in panna cotta with rhubarb and basil sugar. The all-Italian wine list requires knowledge to reveal the gems, but there is help at hand should you need it. Mon.-Fri. set 2-course lunch £29.50, 3 courses £34.50, 4 courses £39.50; set Sat.-Sun. lunch & dinner 2-courses £34.50, 3 courses £44.50, 4 courses £54.50.
