Figlio Wood Fired Pizza has two locations in Columbus and expanding to Dayton. The restaurants are owned by Peter and Laurie Danis.
The couple---Peter and Laurie Danis, both lawyers---who started these restaurants was smart enough to figure out two things: most everybody loves pizza and pasta; and, if you specialize in a couple things, your chances of doing them well are pretty high. Hence, all Figlio restaurants concentrate on designer pizzas and imaginative pastas. There are three or four salads and about as many desserts on offer. Their restaurants are modest yet upscale with a breezy, casual feel, attractive patios and contemporary bar seating. The pizza crusts are made from scratch; by the time they see their duty in the high-temperature, wood-fired ovens, they taste so good that the toppings almost don't matter as long as they don't interfere. But the wild mushroom, Fontina and blue cheeses, and pine nut topping---like so many of the choices here---enhances rather than confounds; ditto with the blackened chicken, chopped tomato, goat cheese and char-grilled portobello combo. Longtime pasta favorites include shrimp and scallops with tomato, wine, garlic and olive oil atop angel hair.
