Z cucina di spirito ristorante & bar

Executive chef and co-owner Brian Pawlak (along with owner Rick Ziliak) describes the cuisine as a mix of 'new' Italian (e.g. beef short ribs or veal cheeks), traditional Italian (e.g. Bolognese lasagna) and Mediterranean (e.g. seafood stew) with a good dose of creativity. Extensive wine list, alcholic beverages, hot drinks and wide range of desserts. The graduate of New England Culinary Institute has helped to earn the restaurant a Columbus Monthly award for Best New Restaurant. Decor is modern, off yellows and tan walls in a roomy dining area and white cloth tables. An intimate bar is also off the dining area. Most entrees in the mid-upper teens ($$) with choices below or well above. Parking is limited in the area and illegal parkers are towed, but valet is offered.
The menu holds so many appealing choices that dining here creates a wonderful dilemma. We suggest starting with the tasting plate. It's almost a meal with calamari fritti, Parmesan risotto fritters, house-made mozzarella and more. Offering traditional plates (we dig the veal scaloppine with cranberry beans, frisée, tomato and sage broth) and modern selections (get the grilled trattoria steak with olive oil smashed potatoes, asparagus and balsamic vinaigrette), there's something for all. Z is known for its butterscotch panna cotta---and with good reason. Still, a crème brûlée martini and caffe a'more with amaretto and Kahlúa could easily (and blissfully) end a meal. Roomy and airy with clean lines and white columns, the dining room sports warm yellow and brown tones with windows overlooking the Grandview Avenue street scene.
