Taverna Plaka's best dishes are the mezze, especially the skordalia, the red pepper spread with pita points, and the hummus. For the latter, you'll be handed a bowl of garbanzo beans and a mortar to mash the bowl's contents yourself to the desired consistency. If, after mezze, you've got room for a main dish, inquire about the fish of the day. Likely it's snapper, grilled whole, and anointed with oil and lemon only. Pristinely fresh, it's a pricier main dish but still a deal as it's plenty for two, and comes with classic Greek greens and mashed potatoes. The classic Greek pasta dish pastitsio is rich and filling, and so is the moussaka. Braised lamb shank comes on a bed of creamy tomato-laced orzo, itself worthy of main dish status. Most dishes are plenty for two or will leave you enough to take home for another meal. Baklava and a custard-filled pastry are the most notable finales. Greek wines rule, and there is a martini list, but in a Greek restaurant? Lithe dancing ladies baring slim tummies perk up the ambience, even on weeknights.
