Marx Brothers Cafe Description:
Set in an original 1915 town-site home overlooking Cook Inlet, this is one of Anchorage's dining gems. The tables are presided over by Van Hale, a partner and permanent fixture. Rose-colored walls showcase work by local artists and photos of the three partners. Jack Amon, a self-taught chef and another restaurant partner, revises the menu nightly and works his magic in the kitchen using local ingredients as well as exotic specialties. We always start with Van's Caesar salad, made tableside by Hale himself. Renowned for inventive preparations of fresh Alaskan seafood, the grilled giant tiger shrimp and Kodiak scallops served with a chilled honeydew melon sauce, crispy prosciutto di Parma and toasted quinoa is a winner. We also suggest the grilled ostrich fan filet accompanied by spiced risotto and spinach seasoned with ground Syrian sumac. The dessert menu will appeal to everyone, beginning with flourless blackout chocolate silk cake and the nectarine upside-down cake with spiced caramel vanilla bean ice cream. The wine list features selections from around the world in every price range, and includes a tempting selection of half bottles.
