Italian restaurants abound in Detroit’s neighboring Canadian city, and one of the most unselfconsciously charming is this spot tucked into a storefront in a Windsor neighborhood. The 90-seat restaurant with the friendly hiss of an espresso machine and the snap of burning logs in the pizza oven attracts an Italian-speaking crowd as well as those who love the authentic fare and modest price structure. Thin-crusted pizzas from the wood-burning oven can be shared as an appetizer or eaten as a meal, but there is much more to choose from including a number of pasta dishes, linguine with mussels and spaghetti Bolognese, for instance, as well as sole Piedmontese, filet mignon with black pepper and brandy, and a number of veals, all accompanied by pristinely fresh green salads and crusty bread. Luciano Verardi is the proprietor who still speaks with the accent of his native Costenza.
