Chart House Restaurant Description:
This Chart House is like all other Chart Houses: it is perched on a waterfront overlooking a scenic locale. But none of the others could be as spectacular as the Weehawken outpost where the scenic locale is the majestic New York City skyline. Unfortunately, the fare is not as impressive though it is dependably market-fresh and well prepared. And service, while not always perfect, is at least friendly, and the menu broad and interesting. The seafood cookery axiom, simplest is best, is especially true here where some dishes are overcomplicated with too many sauces, toppings, crusts and garnishes. A favored dish is Chilean sea bass. Broiled and lightly seasoned, its buttery, white and flaky texture excels. It is far better than the house's best-selling macadamia-crusted mahi mahi served with warm peanut sauce, spiked with a touch of the sweet hazelnut liqueur Frangelico and accompanied by mango coulis and rice pilaf. This is a case of too much happening on a dinner plate. Some elaborate preparations do work. Crab, avocado and mango stack is one. This towering appetizer layers tropical flavors and textures in a visually exciting and decidedly delicious way. Still, basics win out. Can anything be better than Chart House New England clam chowder? Rich in creamy flavor and studded with soft, salty clam bits, it is heavenly.
