Highway Inn Description:
The walls of this homey spot are lined with photos from the days when pineapple and sugar cane ruled and feature the mills, trains and workers who called Waipahu home. More than 60 years ago, the founders, Seiichi and Sachiko "Nancy" Toguchi, started the restaurant as a way to support their family after returning from a WWII Japanese internment camp in California. The third generation runs the restaurant now and faithfully produces its dishes with the same recipes and care. They make their own lau lau, those pouches of pork and butterfish wrapped in ti leaves. Try a combination plate with kalua pig and lau lau accompanied by lomi salmon, pipikaula (dried beef), poi and haupia for a traditional meal. Also available are items like corned beef and cabbage, beef stew and breaded shrimp with gravy which are prepared and served in a way that can only be described as local-style. The seating area is small, and the service is friendly and accommodating.
