Menier Chocolate Factory Description:
This was, as the name suggests, once a chocolate factory. It's retained all the attractions of a former industrial building with bare red brick walls, wooden floors, odd levels and industrial-style ironwork columns. The theatre is a little gem, continuously putting on plays which transfer to the West End, an additional reason for booking at this slightly out of the way venue in trendy Southwark. The food is honest to goodness, not subtle but delivering good value and large portions. Try a first-rate pea and fennel potage (soup) with dill crème fraîche or chicken liver and foie gras parfait with black currant and brandy chutney. Or share a groaning carnivore platter. Mains include pastas, the odd curry, wild game sausages, duck leg cassoulet and the like. Desserts---if you have room---include the Menier brownie, a real killer for the waistline. The wine list is decent and not greedy; service is quite delightful; the whole experience very worthwhile.
