Julie's Cafe & Bar Description:
Originally the local corner grocery store, its interior preserves some of its various reincarnations. Ukrainian born Julie Llewellyn and her family who owned the place when it was a grocery store lived in back and took it through some of its first lives; daughter Sylvia and her Cuban-born partner Jesus Baute turned it into a Cuban restaurant. Aguacate salad features oak leaf lettuce, ripe avocado, cucumber and tomato. Tapas-style aperitivos include spicy red wine-poached chorizo. And, yes, plantains do turn up on many dishes as is the case in Cuba. Satisfying pollo con platano maduro, for example, consists of juicy, grilled chicken breast stuffed with ripe plantains. Ropa vieja, the most traditional of Cuban dishes, puts shredded beef with tomato sauce alongside ripe plantain and the other Cuban stable---rice and beans. Sylvia makes the desserts and marinades. Her Key lime pie with fresh cream and hot mango banana bake are not to be missed.
