DECO at Civic Description:
No one can accuse chef Peter Conistis of accepting defeat. After weathering the demise of a previous restaurant, Omega, he's risen again like the Greek legend he is to begin again, some say better than ever, at this central Sydney restaurant in the renovated and much-loved Art Deco Civic Hotel. Better still, Peter's mother, Eleni (mentor and partner-chef at their restaurant, Eleni's, several years ago) is close at hand---downstairs, to be exact, with her own gig, Eleni's @Civic. Rather than simply calling his food Greek cuisine, Conistis says it's Modern Mediterranean. Certainly it flies far beyond the traditional, pushing boundaries and working well because of his skills. The seasonally-changing menu may include a duck confit and quince pie served simply with shaved fennel, or a salad of fresh figs and sheep's milk feta with a spiced lamb "cigar," and other dishes that spin off with traditional ingredients. Do pray, though, that the signature dish of delicately moist pink snapper, rolled and baked in a light veil of kataifi pastry, is there when you dine.
