Legume Description:
When owners Trevett and Sarah Hooper returned to Pittsburgh from San Diego, they brought along a California attitude for their business. A small neighborhood bistro, Legume exhibits a laid-back ambience with an intense focus on quality ingredients---seasonal, sustainable, frequently organic and local. The restaurant's eclectic décor is relaxed and homey, though the high noise level precludes intimate dinners. French and Italian country cooking influences the edited menu. The kitchen excels at comforting cassoulet as well as the signature half chicken cooked under a skillet, served with potato mash. Once each season, a tasting dinner offers such offal as veal cheeks, tripe stew and pork belly. Another winner: sliced cauliflower and celery salad, with white anchovies, croutons, pickled yellow beans, Parmesan and mustard vinaigrette. On Wednesday nights, in addition to the regular menu, there's a vegetarian tasting. Panna cotta and chocolate truffle cake top the desserts list. It's BYOB, with a $4 corkage fee.
