In a town full of Tex-Mex restaurants, this local chain has outlived better and worse competitors. Like the original Montrose location, here the colorful walls and bright, open concept add to the charm; but the tropical outdoor patio is what keeps regulars coming back. This location even overlooks a picturesque creek for its dining and bar guests, and all the fresh air just adds to the ambience. The food can be hit-or-miss, but always a hit is the sinful Avocado Adobe. The original recipe called for a deep-fried avocado stuffed with cheese and stewed chicken, and drowned in ranchero sauce (we recommend the sauce on the side). Those not up for so many fat grams can feast on the Tex-Mex light menu of shrimp and taco salads, chalupas and tacos. From the nachos to the rice-and-beans sides, this is standard fare---with one exception. Café Adobe turns out a good enchilada---especially the sour cream-chicken version. We also crave the nachos piled up with fresh goodies and lots of jalapeños---a perfect foil for the strong, limey frozen margaritas.
