Red Basil Thai Cuisine Description:
Red Basil has been Stowe's it restaurant since it opened. The combination of martini bar, sushi bar and traditional Thai food---a refreshing alternative to traditional ski town fare---attracts diners to the small converted house on Mountain Road. With brightly colored halogen spotlights illuminating wooden tables, a handful of booths and the bar, the atmosphere is more trendy Euro than Thai, perhaps to attract the après ski crowd looking to begin the evening with martinis. But the menu serves as a reminder that you're closer to Bangkok than Paris. Panang curries, pad thai noodles, duck and seafood all have hints of fresh cilantro, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galingale, ginger, dill and, as the restaurant's name suggests, basil. We recommend the masaman curry and beef in a delicate ginger sauce. Don't ask the chef to make your curry mild, or you'll risk losing the robust, sometimes complicated flavors that define Thai food. The menu also wanders east from Thailand into Japanese cuisine with a small selection of sushi, sashimi, teriyakis and tempuras. Start your meal with one of many martinis, though James Bond's favorite libation doesn't come cheap.
