Brown Sugar Description:
Tucked away at the Stardus Clubhouse at River Valley Road, away from the nearby food haunt at Mohamed Sultan Road, is Brown Sugar, the smart bistro café by fund manager-turned-chef-turned-restaurateur Yuan Oeij. You can access this restaurant via a glass door facing the outdoor parking lot, or through a frosted glass entrance from inside the clubhouse. Scribbled on an elongated chalkboard are set lunches and the day's specials, while a clever use of mirror panels, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and theatrical spotlights transform the neutral-toned space into a snug and inviting dining place. While the menu tempts with alluring descriptions, the kitchen delivers some hits and misses. Above average courses include pan-seared foie gras in its own jus reduced with wine, a classic dish with a pink, velvety texture and a lightly charred top; seafood linguine marinara wrapped in parchment, served piping hot with a spice note that packs a punch; and a hand-chopped Wagyu burger with small hidden chunks of fat drizzled with truffle mushroom sauce and served with crispy golden fries. Desserts are satisfying rather than exciting; chocolate lovers should not miss the warm molten Valrhona chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream.
