Olivar Description:
We want to shout "olé!" after a meal at this charming Spanish bistro in the historic Loveless Building. Unfortunately, no one would heard us because the noise level makes conversation almost impossible. The small dining room is like a tiny jewel box, with enchanting low lighting and Russian fairy tale murals from the 1930s. Chef-owner Philippe Thomelin offers an original Mediterranean-inspired menu that puts a new spin on small plates and tapas, adds a reasonably priced wine list, and friendly service. Given the generous portions, two can easily share several starters and one larger plate. Start with the elegant grilled pear and Belgian endive salad enhanced with shallots, walnuts and blue cheese. Be sure to try the nicely seasoned albóndigas de Cordero---classic Spanish ground lamb meatballs paired with a kicky tomatillo purée. The hand-rolled potato gnocchi---lightly browned fluffy puffs of potato tossed with wild mushrooms and shaved manchego cheese---is another dish to target. We also recommend the seared scallops matched with crispy saffron-scented spaghetti squash and a pepper beurre blanc. Choose the moist olive oil cake with honey-flavored ice cream for a fine finish.
