Down-home, regional comfort food is the theme here, but the locale that's featured changes quarterly, which keeps locals coming back and also attracts patrons from across Seattle. With the convivial ambience of a big, noisy family kitchen, The 5 Spot occupies a renovated 1912 building and features an open kitchen, wooden booths and linoleum floors. As the first venture of Jeremy Hardy and Peter Levy's restaurant group (others include Atlas Café, Endolyne Joe's and Coastal Kitchen), it sets the tone. Along with the themed offerings---locales have included Truckin' into Texas and Big Food in Little Italy---the regular menu is just as eclectic: roast chicken, Southern-style country ham, halibut and chips, and tostadas. No telling how many waiting in line for breakfast have a hankering for huevos rancheros or red flannel hash. Service too often lands between laid back and challenged, but locals know to roll with the flow.
