Combining south-of-the-border favorites with seasonal Pacific Northwest ingredients, Barrio brings an innovative spin to Mexican cuisine. Owned by the folks behind Purple Café & Wine Bars, the restaurant boasts a sophisticated dining room featuring heavy metal chairs, concrete floors, and a wall of 200 flickering candles creating a warm, urban atmosphere. We recommend the Dungeness crab cakes with fresh tomatillo sauce, duck confit tacos, and wild salmon ceviche marinated in coconut milk with cucumber. Light and crispy masa cakes are a must-order, along with a shareable bowl of mussels steamed with dry-cured chorizo and fiery habanero chile. Although small and pricey ($4 each), the inventive tacos are first-rate, particularly the roasted wild mushroom and the pork tenderloin taco with caramelized pineapple. Entrées range from grilled rib-eye steak to churros served with a spicy chocolate sauce. The well-trained waitstaff is upbeat and professional.
