Don't even bother spending a fortune on airline tickets to Italy. Just gas up the car and drive to Sassi, for the delights of executive chef Peter DeRuvo (chef Wade Moises has left the restaurant). Located on six acres of desert at the base of Pinnacle Peak, this replication of an Italian villa has everything going for it---a spectacular mountain setting, friendly but professional service and first-rate Italian cuisine. To be honest, it's light years from the tomato sauce-heavy food most of us associate with Southern Italy. At Sassi, expect to find aged prosciutto, sardines, marinated octopus, house-made head cheese, stuffed zucchini squash blossoms, hand-made pastas, rustic breads and Italian entrées of steak, poultry and fish that incorporate fresh, seasonal ingredients. Every dish is simple but elegant---just close your eyes and point at the menu.
