Teatro ZinZanni: Love, Chaos and Dinner Description:
Underneath the roof of a lavish, 100-year-old spiegeltent is where the cast, crew and kitchen staff of Teatro ZinZanni wine and dine guests from all over the Bay Area. The tent, with an interior adorned with stained glass and mirrors, is one of only a handful of these European traveling tents still in existence. Adjacent to the tent is a large, whimsical lounge with a full bar and a shop for buying last-minute feather boas. The five-course menu is not too unlike what one would find at a wedding catered by a mid-level hotel: passable, but not memorable. Soft cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery kick off the night, followed by a straight-ahead soup and salad course. The soup, a white bean purée, with spicy and tangy flavors playing against one another, is a highlight. The grilled pork flat-iron steak, however, is not as impressive. The wild mushroom farro risotto is gluey instead of creamy. It should be said that no one visits Teatro ZinZanni to have a Thomas Keller experience. Rather, it's to see a couple perform a death-defying trapeze act over salad, or another duo flung into the air by way of a rope pulley with dessert.
