Iluna Basque Description:
A youthful hum permeates the moody deep red and dark wood dining room. Solo diners and groups congregate at a long communal table while whispering couples at tiny tables take in the expansive view of Washington Square from the two corner plate-glass walls. Basque chef Mattin Noblia hails most recently from the kitchen of Piperade and serves up a seemingly authentic taste of his home country's tapas. Crab croquettes, or txangurro in Basque, are a delightful sensory sensation of crispiness followed by creaminess. Cool gazpacho soup is elevated by saffron mussels. Amatxi-style duck rillette pairs nicely with many of the French and Spanish wines on the moderate wine list. The tortilla of egg and potato is fortified by spicy chorizo and piquillo peppers. Be prepared for hit-or-miss service either because a crowd has collected at the door due to a no-reservation policy or simply out of a lack of enthusiasm for attentiveness.
