Blue Jay Cafe Description:
Named for co-founder Jay Foster (who also co-founded the popular Emmy's Spaghetti Shack), the Blue Jay Café is striking a resounding chord with diners weary of the ubiquitous small-plates phenomenon. Foster drew upon his roots to devise a menu of classic Southern comfort food. The simple interior features a large U-shaped bar, along with a skylight and plantation fans on the ceiling. The walls, half painted cream and the other half deep blue, host the work of local artists. The ambience may be lacking, but hungry hipsters don't come for the frills, they come for the hearty fare. Try the catfish po' boy with chipotle aïoli, lettuce and tomato on a soft, sweet bun; or the Baltimore---a sandwich of chicken breast chunks tossed with spicy mayo and bits of pimento and topped with cool tomatoes, crisp bacon and a thick slice of cheddar. The creamy grits are wonderful---order them cheesy and the cook mixes rich Gruyère into the hominy. But the real star here is the freshly fried chicken---the coating, smacking of paprika and rosemary, is thin but crunchy, and the meat is as juicy and tender as any we've had.
