Heaven's Dog Description:
Charles Phan is synonymous with the Slanted Door, where he's taken Vietnamese cuisine to a whole new (sophisticated) level, and Out the Door, a more casual chain serving similarly tasty, albeit less expensive, Vietnamese fare. At Heaven's Dog, located in the hip SoMa Grand apartment complex, he ventures into new territory: Chinese. Luckily for his fans, he's hit the nail on the head once again. The focus here is on handmade noodles, but all of the dishes please with intense flavors: pork dumplings shine with a brothy filling, while lamb kebabs pack plenty of heat. Several of the wok-prepared starters are standouts, including the fatty pork bun and addictive, salt-and-pepper fried squid that have just the right amount of acidity. To wash it all down, there's a list of several creative cocktails, or even better, the "Freedom from Choice," where patrons tell their servers their favorite spirit and let the bartenders do the mixing. Much like the SoMa Grand itself, the restaurant features clean lines, and a long bar allows for large groups to congregate. Another bonus: Even if you weren't lucky enough to score a reservation, the adjoining Noodle Bar accepts walk-ins. Phan knows just what his customers enjoy---style combined with flavor---and continues to deliver.
