Few coffeehouses in St. Louis get by with just coffee nowadays---liquor licenses, high-caliber chefs, live music and tasting events are de rigueur. Even among these overachievers, Café Ventana stands apart. Its ambitious kitchen turns out three meals a day plus snacks and a late-night menu, and along with the first-rate coffee it offers wine, beer and signature cocktails so good they're alone a draw. Café Ventana promotes itself as a New Orleans bistro, and it has the beignets to back up the claim. But it's casual enough that students from nearby St. Louis University can spread out their books and study, telecommuters can hook up their laptops undisturbed and moms can park the strollers on one of three patios for a leisurely klatsch. The order-at-the-counter lunch tends to be busy, but not chaotically so. Though the short menu doesn't break much new ground, items frequently riff on a familiar dish, like the Cuban sandwich served as a wrap. Cakes, pies, chocolates and pastries are available, but it's hard to bypass those beignets.
