This comfy neighborhood bistro is named for the anise-flavored liqueur popular in Provence, France. For starters, you might share a plate of the rings-only calamari with a lively if light-bodied, slightly spicy tomato sauce and a zingy aïoli. Or dig into a big bowl of classically prepared mussels. The entrée menu includes a variety of pastas, such as the tasty vegetarian penne with a Gorgonzola cream sauce and tons of fresh mushrooms. At lunch or brunch, consider the croque monsieur, to which you may append a pair of properly cooked soft-poached eggs if having the dish for brunch. Seafood fans should check out the catch of the day. French touches are everywhere, with a Camembert soufflé, confit of duck, chicken Cordon Bleu---and similar familiar fare. Dessert showcases the classics, such as crème brûlée. One thing that needs serious attention is the bread. The wine list is respectable, although not exciting whatsoever, but provides respectable quaffs at a variety of price points, and there's plenty of Pastis on hand for after dinner. The move to 928 Canton St. allows expansion of the entertainment factor. Imagine listening to the Jason Marsalis Quartet for just $10 ($15 if you bought your ticket at the door).
