Barking Crab Restaurant Description:
The Barking Crab isn't the best seafood joint in Newport, but with live lobsters and a traditional clambake, it's the closest thing you'll find to an old-fashioned shore dining hall. A good beer selection is offered at the large, central bar, including regional favorites such as Newport Storm, Harpoon and Otter Creek. The dinner experience can be uneven. Crab cakes are moist and meaty and nicely accompanied by a sweet cilantro sauce for dredging. The skin-on, cedar-plank grilled salmon is rich enough on its own without the lemon-dill butter, and the side of chunky garlic mashed potatoes is good traditional comfort food. After Memorial Day you can sample the restaurant's five varieties of crab, something you won't find on any other menu in this seafarer's town.
