Salvation Cafe Description:
Amid today's glut of pretenders and over-reachers, Newport's Salvation Café manages to maintain its eclecticism with genuine style. The aqua paint, mismatched artwork (both originals and prints) and lamps made from '50s-era salon hairdryers make for a comically cozy vibe, enhanced by the open summer patio and warm Pagoda Room to the rear. Fried calamari stands out from the pack with its imaginative toss of vinaigrette and wasabi aïoli. The pad thai is bargain-priced, as are all of the entrées (none higher than $21). Vegetarians will go for the risotto with wild mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes or the tofu pad thai, but Salvation also deftly delivers for carnivores with a bistro filet of grass-fed beef with Gorgonzola demi-glace and its signature braised beef short ribs.
