Matador Description:
Located in a 100-year-old building in Old Town Redmond, this spot is an upscale "adults only" Mexican restaurant (guests must be at least 21 year old) with an outdoor deck and fire pit. The dark bar area is a welcome place for an after-work drink, and the tequila selection is impressive. Otherwise, the dark booths and warm colors create a cozy setting for an intimate evening. Like its sibling restaurants in Ballard, Tacoma and West Seattle, the menu features reliable Mexican standards, but also takes many dishes a step further with deluxe ingredients and peppery spice---from smoky to scorching. Enjoy a bowl of chunky chili, or be more adventurous with bacon-wrapped jalapeños stuffed with goat cheese. There's delightful mahi mahi or well-spiced habanero prawns, but we usually head straight for the meat. The carne asada is first-rate, moist, and paired with sautéed corn and leeks, as well as garlic mashers. Carnitas, a dish of pork chunks served in a sauce hinting of cinnamon and orange, is another delight, as are baby-back ribs. For dessert, we suggest the silky molten chocolate cake, particularly with vanilla bean ice cream and a rum-caramel sauce.
