Restaurant L'echaude Description:
Weekday lunches at this friendly French bistro attract a crowd of regulars from the offices in the Vieux-Port area of Old Quebec, near the St. Lawrence River. Options include the daily pasta dish, a grilled flank steak with shallots, a salmon or steak tartare, or even a simple cheese omelet. Evening menus are a little more elaborate, as shown by appetizers like bison carpaccio in an orange, wildberry and brandy marinade or a local farmer cheddar fondue with apples and hazelnuts. Entrées include a stuffed rabbit saddle with sweetbreads and blue potatoes or a filet of veal with morels and a creamy blue cheese polenta. Caramel flan, crème brûlée, and homemade ice creams and sorbets constitute the core of a classic dessert menu. Wine is also an attraction for the local clientele, since owner Robert Plamondon is a respected and well-known expert. The wine list features a good number of reasonably priced, easily enjoyable wines, including choices from Québec vineyards as well as top crus from France, Italy or California. A professional staff that has been remarkably stable over the years helps make regulars feel at home and newcomers feel well taken care of. A canopy-covered terrace welcomes diners in the summer.
