An American restaurant calling itself "exquisite" would need to show either real flair or a real sense of humor. Being Thai on the one hand and quite decent on the other, Pakarang justifies its boast. The menu is of the cacophonous variety, with 40 entrées that range from oh-so-stateside to wow-how-Thai; the best of the bunch are classics such as green curry with chicken (plus a strong hit of anise flavor) and the infernal tom yum koong (hot-and-sour shrimp) soup. Cheery waiters show why Thailand is sometimes called The Land of the Smile.
