The Meier Mansion is home to this eclectic Indian restaurant where wine is as important as curry. Get ready to have your cultural sensibilities upended. Plainfields is gracious and elegant, although aging, yet comfortable with a thick carpet, white napery, fine crystal and gleaming table settings. While there are other equally good Indian restaurants in Portland, none make you feel quite so special. The tandoori dishes are especially first-rate, and any meat you order from the tandoor oven will be crispy and red on the outside, soft and moist inside. The samosas are crunchy, and the signature appetizer of fried lentil balls perks up with a dipping in the hot-ginger, cool-yogurt sauce. Every so often, the chef goes Western with his special "whimsy" dinners featuring straight-up Pacific Northwest fare. The lengthy wine list offers something for everyone.
