If only every neighborhood had an Italian spot just down the street. This atmosphere-laden trattoria is a local magnet, packed with neighbors who return again and again for the Northern Italian fare that's both ambitious and well-prepared. The pollo ripieno, for example, is breast of chicken stuffed with ricotta and dried cherries. The pastas and risottos are equally good---and be sure to save room for the unique polenta-cake tiramisu. Everything that appears on the table is homemade. There may be tastier Italian food in Portland, but the ambience at Il Piatto has them all beat.
