Higgins Restaurant and Bar Description:
Portland likes to claim the entire sustainable-agriculture-in-restaurants movement as its own invention, mostly because of people like Greg Higgins. His restaurant uses the freshest, most seasonal ingredients to be found, stocking many of the herbs and produce from his own garden. This downtown spot is really two places: one part a spirited bar serving the regular menu plus a slightly more informal one, and the other the main, two-tiered dining room. You'll enjoy terrific meat and seafood dishes here, line-caught wild salmon, for example, as well as hearty items such as the "whole pig plate"---braised belly, ribs and crepinette, fennel sausage, and black kale and cranberry bean stew. If you are a vegetarian, know that Higgins also serves impressive meatless plates, typically a few interesting choices each evening. While the wine list is first-rate, the beer selection is out of this world, or rather one taken from the whole world. There is even a beer steward on staff.
