Fratelli is a quiet oasis at the hub of Portland's bustling Pearl District. Its long, narrow room is set back just enough from the street action of busy upscale art galleries and boutiques to be serene. You enter through a long corridor, come face-to-face with the kitchen, and notice sturdy wooden tables bathed in a glow of candles. The culinary designation of Italian doesn't give an adequate description, for Fratelli's menu executes subtle turns on Italian regional dishes and is created with the freshest, organic ingredients, many from the owner's own garden. Specials range from pan-seared squab with an acorn squash bisque to wild boar loin served with sweet and sour chanterelle mushrooms. Some dishes, such as the lasagna with beef, pork and béchamel, have become house favorites guaranteed to stay on the menu indefinitely. Service is casual and laid-back Northwest-style, so be prepared for relaxed and patient dining. If a quick bite is what you're after, step into Bar Dué for pizza from the wood-fired oven.
