Portland's Pearl District is as urban chic as you can get, but the Deschutes Brewery & Public House brings a distinctive High Desert vibe to the Rose City. This snappy younger brother of Bend's premier brewery gives a nod to wild Oregon with intricate wood carvings throughout the Public House, but the food and ambience served here are all downtown. The neighborhood is upscale, bustling with art galleries and fancy shops galore. A peek from the sidewalk into this historic building reveals gleaming copper beer vats and a vast room, usually packed with happy drinkers and satisfied diners. The microbrew is topnotch while the food transcends the usual pub grub, including such surprising entrées as lobster ravioli, Maple Porter pork loin, and Obsidian braised beef. Burgers, pizza, salads and sandwiches round out the appealing menu.
