Valley Green Inn Description:
Looking for a brunch or dinner spot to please a relative and your 7-year-old? This is the spot. Built in 1850, the charming historic inn is not only a one-of-a-kind within city limits, but is also one of Philly's most painted buildings---which a trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum will prove. Residing in the Valley Green park and alongside the creek (bring some bread to feed the ducks) the restaurant has long been popular with hungry day hikers and Sunday strollers, in spite of the fact that the food was below average. Now revamped, the menu focuses on regional American, farm-raised and free-range meats and fowl and locally grown veggies when possible. Among the best choices are cornmeal-coated catfish with a Kentucky bourbon, molasses and pecan sauce; a Long Island duckling braised in a hard cider glaze and served with a Granny Smith apple and tart cranberry compote; and a pistachio encrusted Chilean sea bass topped with ginger, roasted peppers, cilantro and butter. Chose any of those and be ready for another hike through the woods. Though the desserts are uninspired---tiramisu and a triple chocolate (dark, white and milk) mousse cake---the changes mesh with the serenity of the setting.
