La Taverna Description:
In the posh area between the Eiffel Tower and the École Militaire on the fringe of the Champ de Mars, this rather unexpected neighborhood restaurant is a gem. (It's a good idea to dine there after a visit to the Tower.) Despite its handsome location and cozy bourgeois setting, La Taverna---under the auspices of chef Gustavo Andreoli, who hails from Lombardy---has been serving pleasant, seasonal "cuisine du marché" at really affordable prices for a decade. The menu is based on fresh ingredients highlighting the traditional Italian themes, and especially those from Lombardy, and can be accompanied by Italian wines from various regions. A mini pizza pays tribute to Italy, but is a trite way to begin. We prefer the fulfilling rolled and stuffed eggplant alla Parmigiana, Venetian-style string beans and cream, or the medley of antipasti. Gustavo excels in risottos that come in many variations: his pear risotto is a delight. The tagliatelles "flambéed" with Parmesan---not to mention the whole gamut of pastas---are also a forte of the house as well as the veal "scalloping" or the fish of the day justly cooked with veggies straight from the market. Coffee and chocolate tiramisu or panna cotta with berries can sweetly conclude this Italian voyage in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
