Visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art would do well to reserve a table at this country French bistro located in an 1868 townhouse. The three dining rooms, all with wood-beam ceilings and decorated with flowers and antiques, are indeed a refuge from the city streets. Chef-owner Pierre Saint-Denis has done a consistently good job since he opened in 1977, and has slowly evolved his cooking. Popular starters include a salad of beets, endive, apple, Gorgonzola, walnuts and walnut vinaigrette; a warm breaded goat cheese and arugula salad; and a creamy foie gras mousse. Main courses include bouillabaisse and scallops with eggplant-potato galette, haricots verts and lime-saffron as well as daily specials. Le Refuge's dessert menu features chocolate mousse torte, crème brûlée and profiteroles.
