East Village Italian joints are a dime a dozen, but Barbone sets itself apart from its red sauce brethren with an impressive pedigree in the kitchen and a beautiful back garden. Inside, the vibe is rustic chic, with dark wood and brick walls in the narrow space leading back to the garden on a deck made from wooden planks. The standout appetizer is the asparagus fries. Lightly battered and crisp but retaining their flavor, they'll disappear in seconds if ordered with a group, as will the accompanying pancetta aïoli dipping sauce. Other starters keep things simple, such as the baby artichokes in olive oil and citrus. Pastas include the red beet gnocchi with Gorgonzola, poppy seeds and Asiago crust while a choice entrée is the slow-cooked lamb shank with polenta. The five-course tasting menu represents a savory bargain.
