Freemans Description:
Part of this Lower East Side restaurant's initial appeal is its elusive location---it lurks at the end of a dark, non-descript alley that doesn't even make it on to most maps, generating enough buzz among the city's hiperati to fill the alley with a collective stomach growl. But finding Freemans (and actually getting a table), is only half the fun. The taxidermy-crammed interior reflects Freemans menu: feel good fare with an emphasis on game. Start with wild boar terrine served with lingonberry sauce and then move on to venison stew with roasted butternut squash. The organic poached chicken is tender and juicy enough to come with a spoon. Several sides---mountainous mashed potatoes, warm and creamy artichoke dip with toast---could make a meal in themselves. Ultimately, you'll be glad you waited.
