Soft lights that are barely visible through lofty grated-metal doors offer the only sign that something abounds beyond Macao Trading Co.'s un-marked entrance. Inside, a diverse urban crowd trades in trendy TriBeCa for a nineteenth-century atmosphere that evokes the cultural contrasts of Macao. At the fully-stocked bar dominating the front of the eatery, a tarnished mirrored backsplash reflects a dark wood interior brightened by old-fashioned bulb lamps. Antiques including typewriters as well as small tables line a balcony over the dining room, lending an authentic air to the aged-ambience. Likewise, pink marble tables and Asian-inspired blue and white dishes add as much to the savory scene as the spicy aromas wafting over from your neighbor's dinner. Family-style eating is encouraged and with two options for many entrées, you can mix-and-match Portuguese and Chinese flavors according to your palate's desire.
