Bodhi Tree distinguishes itself from the panoply of Thai restaurants in the East Village in two ways: design and food execution. Design-wise, the restaurant spurns the mood lighting and pulsating beats of the other Thai spots in the neighborhood for a serene space inhabited by swaths of dark wood, Buddhist knick-knacks and an equally calm staff. The owners, also behind EM Thai and AM Thai in Brooklyn, take their Thai food to another level here. Dishes, presented in traditional bowls, run the gamut from classics to way out there preparations. Sure, there are starters like a refreshing green papaya salad and spring rolls, but you can also try a bold combination of chives wrapped in a steamed rice noodle. Likewise, among the array of noodle dishes are pad thai but also a simple preparation of broad noodles with brown sauce, Chinese broccoli and duck. Meat dishes include flavorful combinations like honey pork with white beans.
