Who could have guessed hot dogs would be a hot commodity in the East Village? With Westville East, the noble tube steak is as gentrified as the rest of the neighborhood. Inside, white tile reflects the sun shining in from Avenue A, and floor-to-ceiling windows open onto the street. The kitchen turns out equally breezy fare: dogs come in several varieties, including natural franks from Niman Ranch and a vegan version. Westville's burger, though less touted, is a smoky taste of summer served atop a Portuguese muffin. Health-conscious eaters who don't want relish on their dinner have quite a few options, including sandwiches (lemon pepper chicken salad) and salads. Some salads available include arugula, smoked mozzarella and pears with lemon and extra virgin olive oil, or a classic Caesar with Parmigiano Reggiano and homemade croutons. Every day there's a huge selection of market vegetables available---some options include roasted beets, sautéed Swiss chard and roasted fennel. There are also "real" entrées, like Newport steak or fish 'n' chips, and brunch offerings extend to egg scrambles and french toast. Like the hot dog itself, Westville East is more than the sum of its parts.
