The modern, plush renovation at The Exeter Inn has been in place for some time, but it's the changes in the kitchen that bring forth the benefit for diners. There's a contemporary bar area for dinner and cocktails and locals and visitors come to sample New England fare. Crispy braised pork breast comes with a soft poached local egg over frisée with a grainy mustard to create your own sauce. A slow-cooked chicken leg with wild mushrooms and caramelized chunks of crunchy bacon is first-rate. The tender filet comes with a rich oxtail jus while a baked Maine cod is powered up with almonds and capers. For dessert, try a peach or raspberry cobbler for a comfort food finale.
